2008 Delay the Real World Fellowship
This year's Delay the Real World Fellowship will award $5,000 to the twentysomething who proposes the best plan to avoid the cubicle. The winner will be selected on the basis of the quality and originality of his or her proposal. Last year's winner, Andrew Morgan, is currently biking, teaching and making a documentary in Central America. 2006 winner Daniela Papi used her prize to live in Cambodia and work with PEPY Ride, which supports educational projects in developing countries and disaster relief areas. For contest details and full bios of past winners, visit http://www.delayingtherealworld.com/fellowship08. The application deadline is April 23rd, 2008. This contest is sponsored by Running Press and Avalon Travel to celebrate the spirit of the book, Delaying the Real World: A Twentysomething's Guide to Seeking Adventure, by Colleen Kinder.

"Colleen's book isn't about how to buy a Eurail pass and have a great summer vacation. It's about how to put off the pressures of post-graduate adult life and continue your education beyond the classroom. That means traveling the world, working abroad, volunteering for causes you care about, and not caring about people busy counting their 401(k) contributions back home. Colleen makes it clear that if you plan it right, the education provided by a year spent squishing grapes barefoot on a farm in Denmark can be more illuminating than four years of papers and finals, and far more rewarding than life as a corporate drone."

Civic Education Project (CEP)

Spend a week (or a month or two) this spring or summer helping young people discover how to make a difference in the world. The Civic Education Project (CEP), a leadership and citizenship program at Northwestern University, is NOW HIRING exceptional staff for the Spring and Summer 2008 service-learning programs.

CEP spring and summer programs offer week-long field study projects for ninth through twelfth graders during the academic year, and intensive, three-week service-learning courses for seventh through twelfth graders during the summer. CEP programs explore complex social issues through academic study, meaningful service work, and meetings with community leaders, and help teach young people how to apply their skills and abilities to pressing social issues in their own communities.

This year, CEP will offer programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, DC, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco, covering a wide variety of topics, including poverty, homelessness, education, public health, law, politics, leadership, and social change.

They are looking for outstanding teachers from public and private schools and universities, service-learning practitioners, other education, youth development and non-profit professionals, and graduate and undergraduate students. Instructional, residential, and administrative positions are available, ranging from one-week to eight-week sessions in the spring or summer. Staff generally receive a cash stipend, room and board, and training in service-learning and experiential education. However, the biggest payoff comes from the opportunity to work with bright, motivated students; to build community with passionate, dynamic colleagues; and to gain valuable experience educating young people about civic engagement and social responsibility.

To learn more about CEP programs and staff positions or to apply online, visit their Web site at: http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/cep/jobs.

Applications for spring and summer staff positions are accepted at any time, but are reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received, so candidates are encouraged to apply early for the best consideration.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Question:  I don't have an internship secured for the summer. Is there anything I can do at this point, or am I out of luck?
Answer:  There are four internship opportunities (paid and unpaid) for every student who wants one. The qualifying term here is "for every student who wants one." This means that you, the internship hunter, are not dealing with a zero-sum situation. You have four internships (good ones) waiting for you; all you have to do is hunt for them. The bad news is, two of those four internships haven't been advertised yet. So, you can either wait for them to be posted (not ideal), or you can use your career center's contacts and e-mail recruiters and inquire about any openings they might anticipate for this summer (ideal). It's not too late to do this. Many good internships become open late because they are unplanned, or some money has surfaced in a manager's budget, or the hired intern backs out.
