Teach for America Needs You!

TFA is seeking applicants for the role of Campus Campaign Coordinator. The application deadline is Sunday, April 13th. TFA is also hiring Recruitment Associates (professional staff) for their NYC, DC, Chicago, Atlanta regions, and potentially Boston and LA, too. Research Associates are entry-level positions on the recruitment team, and they help to run the campaigns on several college campuses. The RA position is typically held for 1 to 2 years post-graduation, and then RA's may move on to higher positions on staff or onto corps member positions. Central NY Communications Consortium
April 14th to 16th, 2008
The Central New York Communications Consortium is co-sponsored by five of Central New York's most competitive communications programs, and is held annually at Syracuse University. Hundreds of students participate in this three-day event, as well as many of the top companies in the field of communications. The program provides students with the opportunity to interview for entry-level jobs and internships with large and small firms in the communications industry. It also provides employers with a comfortable, cost-effective setting in which to interview a large number of students from top communications programs.

This year, the CNYCC Career Fair will take place on April 14th and the interviews will be held on April 15th and 16th. Students interested in an interview who missed the application deadline (end of February) may still be placed on one or more schedules at the recruiter's discretion. Summer Internship: YKASEC - Empowering the Korean American Community
"YKASEC - Empowering the Korean American Community" was established in 1984 to meet the needs and concerns of the Korean American community through their five program areas: Education, Civic Participation, Immigrant Rights, Social Services, and Culture. YKASEC places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of marginalized community members who have less access to resources, including the youth, elderly, recent immigrants, low-income residents, and limited English-proficient residents.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP:

YKASEC Interns will perform the following types of duties:
• Help provide services for low-income clients: tax help; free legal services for immigration, labor, and housing issues; and direct assistance helping clients to receive benefits.
• Engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of immigrants, low-income community members, and communities of color, in coalition with other organizations and groups.
• Conduct educational activities for community members to inform them of issues that are impacting immigrant communities, including the Korean American community.
• Organize efforts to increase civic participation in the Korean American and Asian American community, such as voter education/empowerment activities and voter registration.
• Participate in cultural activities designed to promote ethnic and cultural heritage.

DETAILS OF INTERNSHIP:
• Supervision: Interns are supervised directly by the Program Director.
• Compensation: Interns will be paid $10.00 per hour.
• Hours: Interns are expected to work full-time during the week.
• Duration: The internship runs from June 2nd until August 8th, 2008.

Korean-language or Chinese-language proficiency is highly recommended. Civic Education Project (CEP)

Spend a week (or a month or two) this spring or summer helping young people discover how to make a difference in the world. The Civic Education Project (CEP), a leadership and citizenship program at Northwestern University, is NOW HIRING exceptional staff for the Spring and Summer 2008 service-learning programs.

 

CEP spring and summer programs offer week-long field study projects for ninth through twelfth graders during the academic year, and intensive, three-week service-learning courses for seventh through twelfth graders during the summer. CEP programs explore complex social issues through academic study, meaningful service work, and meetings with community leaders, and help teach young people how to apply their skills and abilities to pressing social issues in their own communities.

 

This year, CEP will offer programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, DC, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco, covering a wide variety of topics, including poverty, homelessness, education, public health, law, politics, leadership, and social change.

 

They are looking for outstanding teachers from public and private schools and universities, service-learning practitioners, other education, youth development and non-profit professionals, and graduate and undergraduate students. Instructional, residential, and administrative positions are available, ranging from one-week to eight-week sessions in the spring or summer. Staff generally receive a cash stipend, room and board, and training in service-learning and experiential education. However, the biggest payoff comes from the opportunity to work with bright, motivated students; to build community with passionate, dynamic colleagues; and to gain valuable experience educating young people about civic engagement and social responsibility.

Internship in Public Arts in Syracuse
Syracuse's new Public Arts Commission was formed in the last year to encourage public display of art that has been loaned or sold to the city. This internship will entail: looking for/applying for grants, setting up Commission subcommittee meetings, working on the Public Art Master Plan, coming up with new and innovative initiatives, and helping out with the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and Lipe Art Park (http://www.40belowsummit.com, see Public Art). The intern would work from home most of the time, or at the Cultural Resources Council, but would meet with the Public Art Coordinator on a regular basis in addition to attending meetings. International Virtual Career Fair
The NACE International Student Virtual Career Fair is LIVE. This fair is meant for International students currently studying in the United States who want to return home for an internship or after graduation.

Sample employers include Disney Worldwide, AON, Deloitte, KPMG, Lehman Brothers, Unilever, Citi, Shell Oil and more. Turner T3 Program
The Turner T3 Program provides trainees with a hands-on learning experience via an 11-month training program in Atlanta, GA. Turner Entertainment includes the following leading divisions: TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Turner Studios, and CNN.com. The T3 Program begins in July of 2008. The selected trainees will be assigned to one network/division for the entire 11- month, paid training period.They seek candidates who are creative, business-minded, innovative thinkers with a passion for entertainment. All materials must be sent directly to T3 by March 31st, 2008. Candidates are encouraged to send a project, along with their resume and cover letter, which demonstrates their special skills and displays any organizational abilities they may have. 2008 Delay the Real World Fellowship
This year's Delay the Real World Fellowship will award $5,000 to the twentysomething who proposes the best plan to avoid the cubicle. The winner will be selected on the basis of the quality and originality of his or her proposal. Last year's winner, Andrew Morgan, is currently biking, teaching and making a documentary in Central America. 2006 winner Daniela Papi used her prize to live in Cambodia and work with PEPY Ride, which supports educational projects in developing countries and disaster relief areas. Working for the Federal Government
No matter what your major or area of undergraduate study, if you're looking for a job where you can develop your professional skills and make a difference in the lives of others, the federal government has a job for you.  Here's a link to a panel discussion that occurred on the SU campus earlier this semester.  The two guest alumni have backgrounds in law, information management, environmental science, geology and chemistry.  They spoke about their day-to-day work within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and provided career advice to students considering a career in public service.

Answer:  Being part of a student club can help you perfect your leadership skills, which is one of the many skills that employers seek. The Office of Student Life (OSL), which is located in Room 126 of the Schine Student Center, is responsible for all SU student clubs and organizations.
