ANNOUNCEMENTS
Internship in Public Arts in Syracuse
This internship is with Syracuse's new Public Arts Commission that was formed in the last year to encourage public display of art that has been loaned or sold to the City. The job description entails: looking for/applying for grants, setting up Commission subcommittee meetings, working on the Public Art Master Plan, coming up with new and innovative initiatives, and helping out with the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and Lipe Art Park

http://www.40belowsummit.com, see Public Art). The intern would have to work from home most of the time, or at the Cultural Resources Council, but would meet with the Public Art Coordinator on a regular basis in addition to attending meetings.

Learning Community Applications Now Being Accepted
The Office of Learning Communities is currently accepting applications for over 40 Learning Communities for the 2008-2009 school year. We encourage you to look at the wide range of options available to you by visiting http://lc.syr.edu.

LGBTA Studies Learning Community:
The LGBTA Studies Learning Community is open to all undergraduate students (including first-year students) who are interested in exploring questions about sexuality, gender and the body. For the 2007-2008 academic year, this Learning Community is based on the sixth floor of Haven Hall. For the upcoming academic year (2008-2009), this Learning Community will provide both single- and double-room housing options. Students participating in the LGBTA Studies Learning Community are encouraged to enroll in QSX112: Sexualities, Genders, and Bodies. Students in the LGBTA Studies Learning Community will have the opportunity to engage in a number of activities--including a retreat and cultural events--both within and outside the University environment. Any student who has already taken a course approved as part of the LGBT Studies Minor, or who plans to take such a course in the Fall of 2008, can enroll in this Learning Community. Students who do not wish to live in Haven Hall can become non-residential members, but they are still asked to go through the Learning Community application process online. ESF Environmental Career Fair
Wednesday, February 27th, 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, Nifkin Lounge and 110 Moon Library on the ESF campus
The goal is to bring together students and employers so they may explore common interests related to permanent employment, summer jobs and internships associated with the environment. Invited employers will include corporate, government, and not-for-profit agencies. This Career Fair will allow students from ESF and SU to explore the great variety of career opportunities available to them. Business Program for Non-Business Majors
The sixth annual It’s All About Business summer program at Wake Forest University is an intense, three-week summer program which introduces basic business concepts to outstanding students from underrepresented groups. It is designed for rising college sophomores, juniors and seniors who are non-business majors. Through coursework and experiential learning opportunities, they will gain an understanding of business fundamentals which they can then use in building their careers. Gannett Co., Inc. 2008 Talent Development Program
Gannett Co., Inc. (www.gannett.com) is accepting applications for its award-winning Talent Development Program. Participants will receive career guidance, feedback, mentoring, and multiple layers of work experience. Their goal is to build a long-term program that provides a pipeline of diverse and exceptional talent by recruiting, hiring and developing a select group of the nation's top graduating seniors (graduate and undergraduate) from the class of 2008.

The 2008 training program will begin with an orientation at Gannett’s headquarters on June 5th and 6th. Participants will then be placed in full-time positions at Gannett locations nationwide. They are looking for graduating seniors interested in advertising sales, television/print/online reporting, circulation, finance and broadcast producing opportunities. A premium is placed on students who are bi-lingual and/or who possess strong multi-media skills. Applications are due by February 29th. Minority Business Student Association Event at Cornell University
Saturday, March 1st, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
MBSA will be conducting their first ever Industry Symposium. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the biggest companies in Investment Banking, Accounting, Consulting, and much more. This event will provide students with interactive sessions, a networking luncheon, and opportunities to work closely with company representatives. Participating companies include: Lehman Brothers; Deloitte, Ernst & Young; and Wachovia. Don't miss one of the biggest networking and interactive events of the year. All students who have an interest in any of the following business areas are encouraged to attend: consulting, marketing, banking, accounting, and human resources. University of Michigan's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) in Health Management and Policy
Many hospitals and other health care organizations in the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint area have agreed to provide paid ($3,000 for the summer) eight-week summer internships in health management and policy to qualified undergraduate students who are interested in the elimination of racial/ethnic health disparities. Students accepted will also receive housing, a food allowance, and travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor. The application deadline is March 3rd, 2008. Minority Recruitment Event at Syracuse University College of Law
Tuesday, March 4th, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, at the Syracuse University College of Law
Are you thinking about a career in law? Syracuse University College of Law will mark National Minority Law Student Recruitment Month with a Visitor Program. This program is open to all undergraduate minority students and high school students in the Syracuse area who wish to learn more about law school. National Minority Law Recruitment Month at Syracuse University College of Law is co-funded by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) and Syracuse University College of Law (SUCoL) to raise awareness of minority recruiting issues facing law schools.

The Program will include:

  • Introduction from a member of the SUCoL Faculty
  • Observation of a trial case by the Moot Court Team
  • Presentation by current law school students on preparing for law school
  • Presentation by an alumnus who will share personal experiences of law school and the legal profession
  • Presentation by the Assistant Director of Financial Aid on financial preparation for law school
  • Presentation by a member of Career Services on careers in the legal field

Turner T3 Program
The Turner T3 Program provides trainees with a hands-on learning experience via an 11-month training program in Atlanta, GA. Turner Entertainment includes the following leading divisions: TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Turner Studios, and CNN.com. The T3 Program begins in July of 2008. The selected trainees will be assigned to one network/division for the entire 11- month, paid training period.They seek candidates who are creative, business-minded, innovative thinkers with a passion for entertainment. All materials must be sent directly to T3 by March 31st, 2008. Candidates are encouraged to send a project, along with their resume and cover letter, which demonstrates their special skills and displays any organizational abilities they may have. Central NY Communications Consortium
April 14th to 16th, 2008
The Central New York Communications Consortium is co-sponsored by five of Central New York's most competitive communications programs, and is held annually at Syracuse University. Hundreds of students participate in this three-day event, as well as many of the top companies in the field of communications. The program provides students with the opportunity to interview for entry-level jobs and internships with large and small firms in the communications industry. It also provides employers with a comfortable, cost-effective setting in which to interview a large number of students from top communications programs.

This year, the CNYCC Career Fair will take place on April 14th and the interviews will be held on April 15th and 16th. If you want to interview for an opportunity,

Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) Opportunity
June 16th to July 25th, 2008
The CHLI invites Hispanic undergraduate students from across the country to apply for the 2008 Ford Motor Company CHLI Leadership Program. Applications can be downloaded from the CHLI Web site at http://www.chli.org. Eight undergraduate students will be selected to become part of this intensive six-week internship program in Washington, DC. The interns will be placed in congressional offices, federal agencies or public policy organizations. The application deadline is Friday, February 29th, 2008. The program begins June 16th, 2008 and ends July 25th, 2008. To apply, applicants must: 1) be a US citizen or Legal Permanent Resident of Hispanic or Portuguese origin; and 2) be enrolled in an accredited four-year college/university or two-year community college. To apply, submit a completed application form, a personal statement, a legislative analysis, a resume, two letters of recommendation, and your official transcript(s). Compensation includes airfare and housing accommodations in Washington, DC, a $2,000 stipend, and a Metro card. Working for the Federal Government
No matter what your major or area of undergraduate study, if you're looking for a job where you can develop your professional skills and make a difference in the lives of others, the federal government has a job for you.  Here's a link to a panel discussion that occurred on the SU campus earlier this semester.  The two guest alumni have backgrounds in law, information management, environmental science, geology and chemistry.  They spoke about their day-to-day work within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and provided career advice to students considering a career in public service.

Question:  I saw the bulletin board outside of 329 HL which shows all of the places across the world where SU students can study abroad. Who can I talk to if I'd like more information about studying in a particular country?

Answer:  The SU Abroad office is located at 106 Walnut Place. Their staff are knowledgeable about the SU programs in Chile, China, France, Spain, England, Italy and Hong Kong (as well as other programs all over the world). They will also address other aspects of the abroad experience, including the application process, financing options, internships, and other work options in your host country, as well as issues related to the cultural transition.
